PCO Statement on the killing of journalist Ma. Vilma Rodriguez

Press Release

The Philippine Communication Operations Office (PCOO) on Friday condemned the killing of veteran journalist Maria Vilma Gomez-Rodriguez in Bato, Camarines Sur on 30 September, and called the incident "an assault on press freedom."

Rodriguez was a columnist for the local newspaper "Bicol Mail." She was also the vice president of the Camarines Sur Press Club and the past president of the local chapter of the National Press Club. She was reportedly shot several times by unidentified assailants while on her way home from work in Bato town.

Call for Justice

PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar called on law enforcement authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the killing of Rodriguez and bring the perpetrators to justice.

"We strongly condemn this senseless violence against a respected and dedicated journalist. This cowardly act is an affront to press freedom and the rule of law," Andanar said in a statement. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Rodriguez and we assure them that we will do everything in our power to bring the killers to justice."

Condemnation of Violence

The PCOO also called on all parties to refrain from violence and respect the role of the media in Philippine society.

"A free and independent press is essential to a democratic society. We must all work together to protect journalists and ensure that they can carry out their work without fear of intimidation or violence. Violence against journalists will not be tolerated," the statement added.

In-depth Investigation

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched a full-scale investigation into the killing of Rodriguez. The PNP has deployed a special task force to Camarines Sur to apprehend the suspects and conduct a thorough investigation.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has also condemned the killing of Rodriguez and called for justice. The NUJP said that the killing of Rodriguez is a "grave setback for press freedom in the country."

Preventive Measures

The PCOO has urged media organizations and journalists to take necessary precautions for their safety in light of the recent killing of Rodriguez. The PCOO said that the government is committed to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that they can perform their duties without fear of reprisal.

Conclusion

The killing of journalist Ma. Vilma Rodriguez is a tragedy for the Philippines and a threat to press freedom. The government must do everything in its power to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such violence does not happen again.
