Biden Backed Legislation Seeks To Expand Voting Access And Combat Dark Money

Freedom to Vote Act Refiled in Congress

Biden-backed legislation seeks to expand voting access and combat dark money

Washington, D.C. - July 18, 2023

Democratic leaders in the US Senate and House of Representatives have jointly refiled the Freedom to Vote Act, a comprehensive election reform bill that aims to expand voting access, protect election integrity, and combat the influence of dark money in politics.

The bill, first introduced in 2021, addresses a wide range of election-related issues. It would establish automatic voter registration, make Election Day a national holiday, and expand early voting and vote-by-mail options. The legislation also includes provisions to strengthen election security, prevent voter intimidation, and ban partisan gerrymandering.

"The Freedom to Vote Act is a landmark piece of legislation that will make it easier for Americans to vote and harder for politicians to manipulate our elections," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). "We must pass this bill to protect our democracy and ensure that every voice is heard."

The bill faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where Republicans have vowed to block its passage. However, Democrats are hoping to gain public support for the legislation and pressure Republicans to compromise.

"This bill is not about partisan politics," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). "It is about ensuring that every eligible American has the right to vote and that our elections are fair and secure. We cannot wait any longer to pass the Freedom to Vote Act."
